I've read online that he memorized all the plans for the making of Washington D.C. after Peter (Pierre) Charles L'Enfant took the plans with him after he left. But other online sources say that this could not have been possible because President Washington and others had copies of the same plans and that there is a copy in the US Liberty of Congress right now. Did Banneker really memorize the map or is it just legend?
What really happened with Benjamin Banneker and the making of D.C.?
It's actually a bit of both. He had memorized them and was able to move the project forward quickly because he didn't have to start from scratch in learning the plans and figuring out how to implement them. But there were other copies for him to work from, he just understood the plans already and got the project in motion quickly. I would actually categorize it "American Folklore".
