This morning on the way to college I made it about 10 miles (3/4 of the trip to school), and my engine lost all power. It would idle, but it was rough. I pulled over, and kept it idling. If I pressed the gas, it would pop, sputter, cough and backfire through the carb (throttle body). It eventually stalled before I got towed by a truck/chain/good samaritan. Upon arrival at school, I tried to start it, and it started and ran fine. I thought it was a chunk of ice in my fuel line. After school, I drove about the same distance on the way home, and the symptoms re-occured...Luckily I made it up the hill into my driveway. What is the deal? EGR? Coil Packs? Map sensor? Why would it run fine for 10 miles and all the sudden quit? NOTE: Last week I put Prestone Gas line Anti-freeze/fuel injector cleaner in my tank.
DODGE QUESTION!!! I own a 1995 Dodge Ram 1/2 ton (1500)4x4 with a 360 c.i.d (5.9) and an auto trans. Whats up?
check the coil...if it goes bad it will act exactly as you describe. They are cheap and easy to install...try it before anything else.
when a bad coil gets hot, it stops working properly and can't handle the load....cool it back down (turn off engine and let it sit) and it will run fine for a few minutes.
good luck!!!
Reply:did you put the gas line anti freeze and fuel injector cleaner in on almost an empty tank or between a quarter and empty?
that could be the problem, same thing happened to me on my 2000 Z71 4x4, kept sputtering and dying when i would start it up before putting it in drive.
Reply:Start by changing out your fuel filter, and see it that helps. (My God, I starting to sound like Dodgeman). Do you have a check engine light by chance? If so, have the system scanned to see what error codes are in memory, and that will give you a direction.
Reply:you,ll have to get the computer scanned on it before you do anything to it,right now if you start buying parts for it you could easily spend a thousand bucks on it and never get it fixed, any of the auto stores usually do this free of charge, and that may give you a trouble code to work with, without having that done its impossible to say exactly what caused that too happen, one thing that will cause it is a bad catalytic converter, but then I'm just guessing at it,have it scanned to be sure, good luck on it.
Reply:the fuel filter is in the tank with the fuel pump...i'd take it by autozone or the other parts house and have them run a check on the computer....its usually free to do this...it would save you a check out fee at the dealer...
Reply:fuel pump in tank
Reply:I had the exact same thing happen to me. What solved my problem was very simple. First of all does your cruise control still work? If not I think I can help you. It is a vacuum leak. Under your battery tray is the vacuum pump for the cruise there is a small hose that runs to it. For some odd reason the corrosion from the battery eats this little tube in half. It's a simple fix just splice a short piece of rubber hose between the break. My truck did the same thing at about 10 miles. By the way this is also the fix for many of you who have lost the cruise but still have power to the switch. Hope this helps.
