A system for transferring locations from a globe to a flat map is?
It is known as a projection because centuries ago, in the days of the cartographers Mercator and Lambert, a light would be placed in the centre of a globe and the information on the globe would be projected on to a cylinder or cone of paper. Modern cartographers do this mathematically but we still call it a projection.
