Depending on your age, your dad can get a special pass from the ticket counter that will let him escort you to the gate. Most airlines allow this for unaccompanied minors.
I'm sure it's scary to travel by airplane for the first time, but actually, air travel is pretty easy. Tips for the airport:
-- See if you can check in online. You can print your boarding pass and save waiting in that long check-in line. Just drop off your luggage and then go to security.
-- When going through security, be sure to have any carryone liquids in a quart size ziplock bag. No items can be more than 3 ounces (unless you check it in). If you carry a laptop, you will have to take it out of its bag and scan it separately. You can repack it on the other side. You'll most likely have to take off your shoes too for scanning, and remove any large metal objects (like a big belt buckle).
-- Arrive early enough to check in and get through security. For domestic flights, 2 hrs is safe, 90 minutes is pushing it.
-- In most terminals, you can buy small things like water bottles, magazines, etc on the other side of security. SO you can wander while you're waiting to board.
-- Most planes board in groups, starting with first class, and then from the back to the front. As an unaccompanied child (assuming you are), then you can request "priority" boarding to get settled.
-- Put your luggage either overhead in the bins, or under the seat in front of you. Always wear your seatbelt.
-- Depending on where you're coming from, you might get a snack on the plane. You can usually get free beverages too, unless it's a discount airline.
-- When you land, just disembark the plane and follow the signs to the exit.
I lived in DC for 5 years and loved it. My favorite sights are the SMithsonians, the monuments/memorial, the Capitol Building, Arlington Cemetary, and walking around the town of Georgetown. There are also lots of great restaurants. And the Metro is easy to use to get around.
Enjoy your trip!!!
