How can I move some Window files to another drive to free some space for my C drive?

I use an old computer for backup purpose and it has 2 drives: C drive is tiny and is installed with XP and is completely full, the bigger drive D is for other data.

I've already deleted all unnecessary files from C, relocated the page files to the D drive, uninstalled all unnecessary Windows components, compressed the drive etc.

I tried to move some files from C to D but Windows would not let me. What else can I do?

I've heard it might be possible to somehow combine the two drives and make Windows see it as one drive? Can it be done without affecting the data on them?

I've also heard of "mapping" the second drive to become a folder on the C drive, something like that... anyone know how to do that?

Please give step by step instructions.

Thanks.

Situation 1: You have only 1 physcial disk partitioned into 2 partitions (C %26amp; D). In this scenario you can use "partition magic" or similar softwares to combine the two partitions or resize the partitions.

Situation 2: C and D are two physical disks. In this scenario there is pretty much nothing that you can do about it except change the C drive to a bigger capacity disk.

To do this, use utilities such as Norton Ghost to clone your C drive to the new bigger drive and replace the C drive.

To answer you doubt on mapping. This will NOT help you for the following reason:

Lets say that in D drive you have some free space and so created a partition out of it (again using tools like partition magic). Or maybe you already have a free partition. Now you can "mount" this partition onto some folder in C drive. This can be done through Control panel--%26gt; administrative tools--%26gt;computer management--%26gt;disk management. However this will not solve your problem since the overall capacity of your C drive has not increased. Only whenever data needs to be written onto the specific folder where you have mounted the partition, you will not encounter disk space problems.

Am I helpful?
Reply:you have to make sure none of the programs are in use whe doing it. I use the C drive fore system file only and all others on d drive like my music and my photos. To do it I have gon to start r/click on say my music and change the location in properties, you have to make sure all your short cut change as well, they usually do. other programs I may use rarely I install on the other drive when I install it, where you given an option. Having two drives or one partitioned drive is the same thing as long as window reads them.Mapping and making a folder on the c drive is not freeing up any space on C. Data transfer may slow you down a bit but if you have enough Ram you may not notice. Other options, are to got to RAID 0 configuration if you cpu speed is slower being an older pc. you can google RAID 0 and readup on it. Or upgrade your PC
Reply:dont think of doing stuff like that. about moving files of c : windows to other drive, it will lead to many problems and to solve them you will have to install windows again, nver touch your windows folder even to free space.

problem is with the space so better try this software

ccleaner

http://www.ccleaner.com - to free memroy

clears

%26gt;temporary internet file

%26gt;cookies

%26gt;history

%26gt;recently typed urls

%26gt;index.dat files

%26gt;last download location

%26gt;recent documents

%26gt;recycle bin

%26gt;temporory files

%26gt;clipboard

%26gt;memory dumps

etc..

just download it and see the difference
Reply:Throw it out and get an Apple Macintosh .
Reply:idk
Reply:In fairness you should just rebuild the computer. You are doing a lot of work to solve a problem a few hours of a rebuild would solve for you.

If you don't like that answer then use Drive Compression.

Good Luck!
Reply:Use Norton Ghost to ghost the Data from the C drive over to the bigger drive. Also Note that running ghost will casue all your data to be overwritten on the drive you are moving data to.
