Most river drainage basins have "fractal" attributes. This means:
a. They drain a fraction of global deserts
b. They fractionate water stable isotopes
c. Their apprearance in map view is scale-invariant
d. Only a fraction of drainage basin rivers carry water
Thanks so much!
Geology question (river drainage basins)?
C absolutely
"Scale invariant" (such a fancy term!) means that river drainage patterns can have a similar pattern or style when viewed at different scales or magnifications.
Try zooming in from space on google earth. The same drainage patterns keep appearing as you zoom in. Many natural phenomena have fractal properties( ie clouds, forests, rock outcrops etc.
Fractals are really neat. Check out some "fractal art" and/or Mandelbrot (the IBM scientist that "discovered" fractals).
I think God just might be a mathematician LOL
