Is it because geography and social science is not taught enough in American schools and that the Media has taken advantage of their lack of understanding? I was astonished to find some schoolmates from America, not even being able to locate Washington D.C. on the American map!
Why are the American people generally very ignorant about the world?
Because world news / issues aren't on our "infotainment" (news) channels. They're censored up the a_ _.
Local news channels might show 1 minute of the war in Iraq on average per broadcast. 1 minute ! For a sham of a war that is without cause....again, it's all censored. Every station runs the exact same stories, which are incidentally owned by a few huge conglomerates.
Not to mention the blatant stereotypes the general US public has against the rest of the world, backed up by our pop culture.
Plain and simple, the government likes to keep us stupid and not asking questions. I mean what other developed nation in the world has to import 65,000+ college/university grads to fill local jobs? NONE.
TV, along with radio is the opiate of the masses and it's not independently owned, it's one sided and it's brainwashing us into hating every other country.
Reply:Simple... as they outsource it to India. LOL
Reply:American are very nombrilists.
You cannot imagine how you miss taste and culture.
Much American always thinks that there are the USA and nothing other...
A few years ago, in vacancy in the United States, a teacher of geography thought and explained me that Africa was a country. She did not want to believe me when I explained to her that Africa was a continent... each time she answered me really! really! I even wondered whether she were a really teacher because she could not locate France in Europe.
Reply:they are more interested in paris and american idol, than what is important in this world. it will be our down fall.
Reply:Yes, it's even worse since Bush's No Child Left Behind program. Children have to get certain scores on standardized reading and math tests, so test taking skills and the necessary facts are taught at the expense of a broader education.
Reply:I couldn't point out Boise, Idaho on a map but that doesn't make me stupid.
Reply:This question is ridiculous because it assumes that Americans ARE genrally ignorant about the world. Wheres your proof?
Can you post a link to a poll that supports this conclusion? An interview? A survey?
My guess is you cant.
Vince
Reply:Yes, you are right. Not only does the Media take advantage of the ignorant, so do liberal teachers who insist on indoctrinating students to support their own distorted views.
Reply:failure of the public education system,,,hell I should no or is that know?anyway map reading is not a usefull skill anyway.free condoms for 13 tear olds ,now thats some educatinal stuff.
Reply:Unless you are fighting for vouchers, I hardly see how this is a political question.
And if you are fighting for vouchers, I agree 100%.
Reply:don't agree, doesn't everyone has their own area of expertise, as long as I know how to get home I'm fine, if you wanna be expert in geography that's your choice in life.
Reply:Ever since political correctness and cultural fairness was introduced in the classrooms, thanks to Liberals and the ACLU, I believe much of this really took hold around the early to mid nineties.
I was taught geography, social sciences and civics. World History and the like and can pretty much read a map and find cities all over the world.
Kids today can be asked, who is our current secretary of state, and most don't even know that.
This is exactly the reason I'm all for vouchers, and also exactly the reason my wife and I are seriously talking about keeping our kids in private schools.
The U.S. public education system is nothing short of a joke thanks to the liberal mindset of things like black history month, or asian week, or hispanic week and ebonics.
PUUHHHHLLLLEEEEEEESEE!
Reply:i suppose it's because we are the greatest nation on the planet, and the rest of the world is just that,...the rest of the world...don't take it so hard..it's us, not you..we can still be freinds.
but this thing about the map...now was the map marked with the names or was it just blank and you had to guess which specific area was washington d.c.? because washington d.c. isn't a very large area and that whole northeast area is pretty dense with many large cities. so one might be hard pressed to locate it without it's name on it. i can spot washington d.c. from a sattilite photo as the entire city has the free-masonry compass and square built into it's make up...pretty cool actually.
Reply:As Canadians we'd better not get too smug, as alot of Canadians according to the Dominion institute can't answer many of the questions we ask of our immigrants to answer to pass our citizens test.
However, I think it's because Americans, for the most part aren't interested in any other country than their own. Their's is the best , they are the best people, why be interested in anyone else who isn't as great as they are.
Alot of them don't even know their own country, if Jay Leno's Jaywalking is any indicator.
However, as Pierre Trudeau once characterized Canada it's like a mouse sleeping beside an elephant. The mouse better know the elephant's every move and characteristic or risk getting crushed or killed in the interim.
Reply:I disagree with you. I will match my knowledge against yours, any day.
Reply:amazing isn't it!!?? SAD
Reply:Jay Leno has popularized a sort of "dumber-than-thou" culture in which some people think its cute and funny to be stupid.
People who know the location of Washington, D.C. and other geographical trivia questions are generally not the types to go on TV and allow themselves to be the butt of the joke.
Plenty of us are educated. Those who aren't educated have consciously chosen a state of ignorance, which is sad.
Reply:The media gives more coverage to Paris Hilton then it does to actual news.
Reply:Were too busy trying to teach the illegals how to speak english.
Reply:It is because many of us watch Fox News. I will match my ignorance with anyone's. No wonder the student couldn't find Washington D.C. on an American Map. Everyone knows it is in Mozambique.
Reply:As long as school subjects like Geography %26amp; European History remain elective subjects, most kids probably choose to do something less dry
My 5th or 6th grade Geography was most countries in the world. One each lesson (basic history, map, culture, natural resources and major imports %26amp; exports). I also played the board game Risk when I was younger so had a pretty good idea where things (roughly!) fitted together..
There is an argument that you don't need to know about what doesn't directly affect you ..
Reply:It's sad. Welcome to the new world. Public education in this country is pretty lame thanks to liberal policies and "fairness."
Why did we stop requiring Latin as part of an education?
You can't even have a pledge of allegiance because of the words "Under God" that some idiots put into it.
And what was the fascination with Ebonics?
It's the same liberal thinking that just says "Oh well, that's the way it is. Might as well accept it and deal with it so that we don't piss anyone off."
WRONG!
But don't worry, there are enough Americans that actually care about their education and their children's education to fill the void.
Reply:Yes that is a good reason it is because America is so big not all of them can be heard and they are taut to do exactly what their told thats the way the American government wants it there public schools suck and their minds aren't stimulated and having George bush as a leader Ha what kinda sick joke is that they are really screwed now. most of them are closed minded and refuse to bellive in anything different.
Reply:Because you don't have to be smart to live in america. And its sad. Hell President Bush most likely can't identify Washington DC. In america this is the rules. If your rich and famous thats you can do anything.
President bush was a C student
Reply:I live in America and I can pick ever state in the USA so I think you are taking to the wrong people!!!
Reply:That, is your public education tax dollars hard at work...

Yahoo Messenger doesn't work with .Net 3.0?
I installed .Net 3.0 on my m/c because the Nokia Maps Loader needs it to run. But now my Yahoo Messenger is not working, it keeps giving error messages all the time and I cannot see anything I type in the window. I tried both version 8.1 and 9, they both have the same problem.
The problem goes away if I uninstall .Net 3.0, but then I can't use the Nokia Map Loader.

Demonstrative means?
A-letters,notes,memos,and tape recordings
B-skid marks and tools used for committing crimes
C-sketches,models,maps,and reconstructions
D-personal recollections of someone with firsthand knowledge of the matter
Demonstrative means?
Demonstratives are deictic words (they depend on an external frame of reference) that indicate which entities a speaker refers to, and distinguishes those entities from others. Demonstratives are usually employed for spatial deixis (using the context of the physical surroundings), but in many languages they double as discourse deictics, referring not to concrete objects but to words, phrases and propositions mentioned in speech.

Can you explain a situation where you would choose airborne imagery over ground truthing?
In each of these examples below, would you use airborne imagery or a ground truthed survey? Explain why.
A) Rare plant survey
B) Plant health survey
C) Plant classification mapping
D) Wetland mapping
Can you explain a situation where you would choose airborne imagery over ground truthing?
A) Rare plant survey - ground
B) Plant health survey - airphoto
C) Plant classification mapping - airphoto
D) Wetland mapping - airphoto
Reply:Terminology is a bit fuzzy. Ground truthing is always used when utilizing remotely sensed or airborne data. It is a method for ensuring that your detection and classification methods are correct. Ground survey is what you would be using for example to do a Rare plant survey, when you establish a grid, or sample area and count the number of plants found then statistically apply to a larger area. You could use a ground survey for plant health as well, although a large area plant health survey can be done airborne with ground truthing.
So, you would almost never use airborne imagery alone, unless there is no access to the area surveyed (happens a lot in intelligence gathering). A ground truthing survey is required for sound scientific data.
A ground survey on the other hand is probably the only way to have a reliable rare plant survey.

Why the misconception that this is a Christian Nation?
All one has to do is look at a map of D.C. and the inverted 5 point start is apparent. Seriously folks, I am not saying our nation was founded by satanists but I don't think they were building a Christian nation. Just look at the dollar. "Novus Ordo Seclorum". New Secular Order. Secular folks. Free of religion.
Why the misconception that this is a Christian Nation?
Then why is 85% of this country Christian
Reply:That doesn't mean free of religion, it means the government is NOT one based on religion.
Every person in this country has the right to practice whichever religion they choose, like it or not.
The problem is not religion, its the peoples ignorance to how our government is supposed to function. The Federal government has no business in 90% of the issues they meddle in.
Reply:because every president we have had has yelled proudly from the mountain tops that he is christian, and whats the major religion in amerika? lets see what a foreigner would think yes?
Reply:Explain all the references to God in the Constitution and early U.S. documents if the founding fathers weren't Christian.
Reply:Correct me if I'm wrong but there is no references to God or Jesus in the constitution.
There is a reference to the almighty in the Declaration of Independence, but Thomas Jefferson was no christian. He was a deist.
Reply:Being Religious and Being Christian are not the same thing. The founding fathers were very christian men and our founding documents reflect their beliefs throughout. "all men were created equal". The key word there being "created". Thats just a start and it goes on and on from there. Free from secular order means that no religious institution will rule over this country. Religion could have easily at that time referred to Muslims as well as Christians and Hindu and so on. Yes everything in our founding documents is based on the fundamental belief of Christ.
Reply:Sorry. You're the one with the misconception. You're an example of the "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing) dictum. If you look at many other features the founders set-up, you will see a fairly clear Christian bent, but without the "old country" attitudes of state-sanctioned religion.
Reply:Secular doesn't mean free of religion.
It means Not religious.
there is a BIG difference

Are Aerial Maps Censored By The Government?
I was looking at "Windows Live" aerial map of Washington D.C.
When looking at key places, I noticed two things.
The White House is visible to the lowest aerial view, but it's obvious that the roof covered over. And when I looked at the capital building, The building and immediate area around it is pixulated.
Is this something that has been done voluntarily or was it mandated by the government for security purposes?
Are Aerial Maps Censored By The Government?
I think it is censored. I was looking at Columbia on Google Earth and most of it was actually blurred out
Reply:Yes, it is done to prevent terrorists from using these maps to plot against the US.

On a private road, can you block someone's right of way to get to their home, if that is their only means?
This is family land divided in 2 different sides - The O's and the C's. At one time, this was one family. The property has been passed down to children and grandchildren. The O side built a gravel road (private) to divide each side. This is the only road developed (on O servitude) for the C's side to get to their homes - permission granted. Of course, each year, we put up monies to keep the road up, where others do not. Over the years the O's has sold their property and homes to people outside the family. They allow usufruct to THOSE people to get to their homes. OK, I want to sell my home now. What the O's are telling me is that they will not allow the new owners usufruct to their property? IS THIS LEGAL?? When my husband and I retrieved our map for the C side (surveyed) their is a 30' servitude, but NO road developed. Please help me with the legalities of this issue.
On a private road, can you block someone's right of way to get to their home, if that is their only means?
They are probably tired of paying for the upkeep of the road without your side of the family (and now complete strangers) paying for anything. Maybe you could add annual road upkeep into the bill of sale.
Reply:Are you in Louisiana? Because "usufruct" is a term I've never heard before--looked it up, and found out it was "use and enjoyment" of someone else's property.
But thise seems, to me, like the common law idea of an "easement." O's estate granted C an easement through O's property for access. If this is recorded in the deed properly, the C has an easement -- it is the "dominant estate" and O is the "servient estate." Generally, so long as the easement "runs with the land," O cannot do anything to interfere with the rights granted to C's heirs throught he easement.
The doctrine of usufruct may be different in your state, and the "use and enjoyment" of the other land may or may not run with the land as an easement does (i.e. when YOU stop your "use and enjoyment" of the land, then the right terminates WITH YOU.) Nonetheless, if your future buyers are not granted an easement, they may petition the court for easement out of necessity (in most states) showing that they have no access otherwise (they would have to pay for this easement, of course).
DEFINITELY seek an attorney's advice on this one.
Reply:The best thing you can do is ask your real estate agent. He/She knows all of the legalities of this, and will be able to help you handle this matter better through the lawyer you will use to sell and purchase your home.
Reply:You cannot obstruct someone's access to their property, even though you own the road. Unless there is something in writing, they do not have to contribute anything to the upkeep of the road.

Le Centre Pompidou?
Okay, I need to know a few things about it.
1. what is its architectural style?
2. what side of the Rine is it on?
3. it's current purpose?
4. how much does it cost to get in for a day?
5. days and times it's open?
6. when was it built?
7. why is it worth seeing?
8. links for pictures showing the following:
a. location of monument in paris
b. metro map showing station
c. picture of builder and year built
d. nice picture showing style
e. map showing monument on right or left bank
f. map showing arrondissement number
g. picture of monument for current purpose, hours, and days
I really need this for a French project due tomorrow. thanks!

How is the drive from Elk Grove Village, IL to Hoffman Estates, IL?
I have accepted a job in Elk Grove, IL and I am considering living in Hoffman Estates, IL. I have looked up the travel time on line and it says it should only take 13-17 minutes (as a highway runs through both towns). However, I would like to know from someone more familiar with the areas if the drive is really that quick, if there are any major detours, or other factors I should consider that I would not be able to figure out just from looking at online maps b/c I will not be able to get to that area to judge for myself until after my job starts.
How is the drive from Elk Grove Village, IL to Hoffman Estates, IL?
They are really close, considering your job and home won't be on the highway, you should only have a 20-25 minute commute.
Reply:Elk Grove Village and Hoffman Estates are virtually adjacent. EGV is immediately west of O'Hare, and Hoffman is just a bit further out. While the Northwest Tollway can get packed at rush hour, it normally does move right along. You'll have the advantage of going the right way (outbound in the morning and inbound in the evening). Note, however, that many of the tollway exits are one-way only (mostly inbound entrance and outbound exit), so you'll need to double check that the tollway works for you. Surface streets will be longer, but still not that bad of a commute (figure half an hour or so). If you can, you'll want to avoid the area just south of the tollway in Schaumburg (home of a lot of malls and office parks) which can get very congested.
Reply:The short answer is that you will have a much better than average Chicago area commute. These are good living and working locations.
I live on the West side of Elk Grove and commute to the South side of Schaumburg but have commuted to just North of Hoffman in the past.
Depending on where in Hoffman you are considering the commute should be about 20-30 minutes at rush hours. The business park of Elk Grove is on the far East side of town.
I would not recommend the tollway/expressway routes. You will be further ahead to use Higgins (rte 72) or perhaps the Elgin O'Hare/Thorndale rd combo. I-90 is miserable in that area during rush periods.
Reply:I think that will be an okay drive most days. If you go I-90 to I-290 (excuse me, Jane Addams Tollway tothe Eisenhower) the latter will occasionally be the busier in that it is a little closer to Chicago. But both locales are so far from the major major traffic that your commute should be pretty good. I often commute from Glen Elyn to both Logan Square or Mount Prospect -- that commute is far easier than my two.
There are other routes but that one is so good I can't imagine them being as good as this one.
There is a little construction at that interchange right now but nothing that I have seen creating delays.

To mathematicians(real analysis)?
Prove that the mapping F:C[0,1]-%26gt;C[0,1] defined by F(f)=q(x)f(x)+(0 to 1(defnt int)∫ p ((x)) f (x)) dx,((where
q, p ∈ C[0, 1] are given fixed functions )), is contunious)
To mathematicians(real analysis)?
I'll assume that the topology on the space C[0,1] is induced by the sup-norm (that is, the distance between two functions f,g is given by sup |f(x)-g(x)| as x ranges over [0,1]; a famous theorem says that the set of polynomials is a dense subset of this space).
Now it is a matter of playing games with the triangle inequality and the fact that the absolute value of the integral is smaller or equal to the integral of the absolute value. You'll need to use the fact that p and q are bounded functions in absolute value.
Reply:The sum or product of two continuous functions is continuous.

Java question?
I am trying to code a method that will take a String input , and replace all the letter 'a's (upper and lower) with the first letter of a String mapping, all the letter 'b's w/ the second letter, and so on. I'm having some real trouble w/ this, for one, i'm not sure how you would go about incrementing a character through the alphabet.
public static String remap(String input, String mapping){
char c = 'a';
int i = 0;
StringBuffer buffer = new StringBuffer();
while(i %26lt; input.length() - 1){
if (input.indexOf(c) == i){
buffer.append(c);
i++;
c += 1;
}
}
return buffer.toString();
}
Java question?
you're not incrementing i if your if statement fails. That is, if 'a' doesn't exist in input, you will loop forever.
If I understand the problem correctly, I would:
input = input.toLowerCase();
while(i %26lt; input.length() - 1)
{
char offset = input.charAt(i);
offset = offset - 'a';
char newchar = mapping.charAt(offset);
buffer.append(newchar);
i++;
}
Something like that, anyway. Probably have to do some casting or conversion of strings to bytes since the types won't match up, but hopefully you get the drift. (This would work fine in C)

A. a floor lamp
B. a globe
C a road map
D a wind tunnel
Chemistry help?
A. A floor lamp
A floor lamp serves no purpose in building or modeling something, but the others do.
A globe is shaped like the world, so it's modeling the world. A road map models the track of the rodes, and a wind tunnel models how air would affect an object.
--Yamakiri
Reply:Technically, all can be used as models, but if that isn't an answer then I'd say the floor lamp. A model is anything that can help to explain something and all of those can. If this is for a class, then tell your teacher that, he or she might be impressed.

Aproching a career, what to do about High School?
next year I am going into HS and that means I should focus on what my career should be
well I want to be a writer and/ or a dancer but a dacer needs to know several different atrebutes to actually get a salary. and since I want to be a writer I need to get into a lot of language arts classes. Well I didn't get into Advanced LA/ english and I had to beg my teacher to recomend me to b in Advanced. now the reason I didn't make it was because my C-sap and Map scores weren't so high. and she recomended I work extreamly hard to stay in that class. well that basicaly means that I have to not go into collage prep geometry which means I can't get collage credits. and that is a problem with my parents. I have to cut back on one or the other because I dance every day from 3-5 hours a day! I have no time to do as much home work so I have to cut back on some thing..choices
-cut back on CP Geometry go into adv. Language Arts.
-take CP Geo.and take regular Language Arts class with creative writing
Aproching a career, what to do about High School?
I would go with the first one. If you want to be a writer it is better to have more language arts, and you may not even need geometry once you get into college. I am a sophomore in a university and I know I personally didn't need a geometry class. But it depends on your major and what college. My thoughts is enjoy life, and don't be in such a hurry to pick a career. I still don't know what I want to do, and all the professors say that is perfectly fine.

Abstract algebra help?
Let f: R -%26gt; C* be the map given by f(r) = cos(2pir) + i*sin(2pir).
a. Prove that f is homomorphism.
b. What is Kernel(f)?
c. What is Im(f)?
d. To what group is R/kernel(f) isomorphic?
Abstract algebra help?
f(r) = e^(2 pi r i)
(a) Law of exponents gives f(x+y) = f(x) f(y)
(b) For what r is f(r)= 1? You must have
cos (2 pi r) = 1 and sin(2 pi r) = 0 and that happens for integers r. The kernel is Z, the additive group of integers.
(c) Image is all of the unit circle of complex numbers, the numbers of absolute value 1.
(d) R/Kernel is isomorphic to the image figured out in (c)). It's a circle group.
Reply:It has been a while since I have taken this class. Go to www.cramster.com
There is a whole answer board that you can ask questions involving higher level math courses on.
